The Child Development Society (CDS) 

The Child Development Society (CDS) was established in 2010, is a non government organisation and is home to 16 children who have lost everything including their parents. There is nothing more heart breaking than losing those you love. These children would be on the street without the assistance of others. The home houses the boys and girls in separate wings enabling them to play, learn and know what a new kind of family can be together. They are very lucky to attend a nearby school which they can walk to. Helping Others Grow is one of the supporters who brings hope and smiles to these children. CDS is dedicated to looking after these children and requires financial assistance to continue to provide shelter, clothing, healthcare, and food. For example to feed 16 growing children requires 15 Bags of Rice per month at a cost of $400 usd. Donations to the Home are collected to aid the children in having as normal a life as can be provided. Your generous donations would be greatly appreciated.

Knit for Nepal

Knit for Nepal is an initiative started by the vivacious Sue Silk from New Zealand an avid supporter of Helping Others Grow. It started with a ‘Beanie for Babies’ and now has women knitting all over the world creating rugs, jumpers, scarves and mittens for those super frosty cold mountain mornings. Knit for Nepal has become a community unto itself bringing knitters together to share stories, food, fun and best of all new found friendships. We are so grateful for the contribution that these women make to the children of Nepal. Cleft Lip Surgery

Sadly in some countries being born with a cleft lip or cleft palate is considered bad luck, a curse, the mark of god. These children will be subjected to a life of ridicule and little chance of finding work or a marriage arrangement. We now know that Cleft Lip Palate CLP are facial and oral malformations that occur very early in pregnancy. It takes as little as 45 minutes for life-changing surgery which can create a bright, beautiful new smile to a waiting child. To date we have funded over 110 transformative surgeries. Families who walked days to reach the local Hospital were not disappointed.

100 Boys in Kashmir needed new winter shoes and the wool poncho coats you see us wearing

The Girls in summer wanted handbags. I was shocked as they didn’t have anything to keep in them. So we supplied combs and hair clips. They also received their first art lesson.

This group of orphans in Kashmir received Teddy Bears and we did some wonderful paintings with them as they had nothing on their walls.

Let There be light

We have installed over 100 Solar Panels for schools and homes in Nepal with no electricity in remote villages as a part of our “Greening One Village at a Time Project”.
Children and Grandparents are experiencing their first exposure to light bulbs in areas that are so remote they may never have had nor seen electricity. We have donated many items of necessity, as well as comfort, to those who have so little.
One Solar Panel @ $150 USD provides hours of clean sustainable power, changing the lives of a family by creating a healthier and productive environment.
Versus Breathing in smoke from kerosene lamps which causes terrible health issues, respiratory lung infections, even cancer, all causing a lack of motivation to work. The lamps can also make their homes susceptible to devastating fires.

Water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink…

Water catchment is vital for those in the mountains otherwise it just runs down the hill. The ponds will collect approx. 50,000 litres of water. This technology has been increasingly used to collect the water in water scarce areas.

If we teach the farmers how to grow a diverse range of crops and they have a reliable supply of water, then they may end up with a surplus which they can trade or sell at the market.

We know that we cannot survive without Bee’s and their magnificent ability to pollinate. What a blessing are these small creatures
Blessed Bee’s play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small.

How sweet it is to eat the nectar of the Bee’s. Spread in on home made bread or add it to tea. Sapana Dreaming Centre for Humanity

Joanna Giles is the Patron of The Sapana Dreaming Centre for Humanity in Gokarna, Nepal, which was built in 2001 and created to provide a place for underprivileged children who do not have access to basic rights, such as education and a safe and loving home.The centre is entirely locally managed and the children are supported by World Youth International sponsorship program.

Conquering My Own Everest

ISABELLE SMITH

During September 2013, I travelled to Nepal where I spent 13 days in Kathmandu with an organisation called
Hog Heaven (created by Joanna Giles). I experienced the highs and lows of extreme cultural shock but, most
importantly I learnt to truly understand why the Nepalese refer to themselves as the happiest people in the
world.

The trip forced me to question not only my own life and its worth but also to question the society in which I
live. By visiting Nepal I realised that western cultures are judgemental and less community based, when
compared to third world countries, and I found this extremely disheartening. The way in which the Nepali
people always seemed to bond together singing and dancing, was a magnificent sight that was not only seen
but also felt in the heart. As a 16 year‐old‐teenager, this experience was an immense leap into understanding
how culture and the importance of community can bring an indescribable type of happiness.

MEMOIR

I arrived in Nepal, feeling a turn in my stomach like never before; the
culture shock was horrific. As I exited the airport, I could feel a hundred
eyes burning holes in the back of my head. People were staring simply
because they knew I was different. I was white. A middle‐aged monk with
the most genuine and biggest smile came and sat next to me while I was
sitting in the airport. He began to have an English conversation with me;
trying to discuss Australia’s politics and the strange land from which I
come. Each time he looked into my eyes, I could see his hope to travel one
day and his burning eager to learn more about the unknown.
